Choquequirao hike 4 days, a trip that takes you to the heart of the Andean mountains and the hidden gem of the Inca Empire, Choquequirao. This lesser-known, but equally spectacular, cousin of Machu Picchu offers a more secluded and immersive experience for intrepid travelers looking to explore Peru’s rich history and stunning landscapes.
Discover the hidden gem of the Inca Empire on our 4-day Choquequirao Classic by Lodge hike. Unlike Machu Picchu, Choquequirao remains relatively intact and offers a more isolated and immersive experience.
Historians once believed this enigmatic city to be the legendary “Golden City,” but it has since been revealed as the last refuge of the Incas and a strategic center of expansion toward the Peruvian coast. Its location, surrounded by sacred mountains and celestial bodies, brings you closer to the gods of the sky, the sun, the moon, the stars and the mountains.
Your epic trip begins at 4:30 am when we pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco and drive for five hours to Capuliyoc in our private transportation. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular views of the Salkantay and Humantay snowy mountains.
When we arrive in Capuliyoc, you’ll devour a delicious breakfast and meet the cook and horseman who’ll make up your trekking equipment. They’ll make sure your possessions arrive safely at each camp and ensure you’re well-fed.
Once we start hiking, you’ll make your way through the beautiful Apurimac landscapes through a enormous valley on a 3-hour downhill walk. You’ll spot two more gigantic mountains, Padreyoc and Qoriwayrachina before we reach our lunch spot at Coca masana (2330 m – 7,644 ft).
When you are complete and with renewed energies, we will continue the walk to the bottom of the valley. Here, you will face the mighty Apurimac River, known as “God who speaks” in Quechua. The water features class V rapids, making it perfect for canoeing or rafting.
Finally, we will make the last decent until we reach Chiquiska (1,900 m – 6,233 ft), our first camp. You will enjoy a tasty dinner before going to bed for a well-deserved sleep.
On this day you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the environment and let the energy of this ancient site take over you. You will take your time and discover each part of the place located in the deep canyon. You’re probably already imagining the impressive landscape that awaits you. Your guide will take you around the site and teach you about the history and other interesting stories.
We will leave Chiquisca at 6.00 am to go down to Rosalina Beach, which will take approximately an hour. Then we crossed the Apurímac River and began to climb towards Santa Rosa, zigzagging along a steep slope. This climb will last approximately 2 hours, and it is important that we leave early so that the heat does not make it more difficult than it needs to be. In Santa Rosa we take a half-hour break, where those who wish will be able to try Cambray, a local sugar cane extract.
We then continued our walk slowly climbing for two and a half hours until we reached our lunch spot in Marampata. From here we walk another two hours until we reach the archaeological complex of Choquequirao, located at 3,103 m/10,178 feet, where we will set up camp and enjoy free time to explore the terraces and buildings.
When the sun begins to set, you may want to sit and look out into the canyon, where condors are sometimes spotted.
This morning we enjoy a complete guided tour of the Choquequirao hike 4 days complex: we will visit the high parts (Hanan), and the low parts (Urin), and some areas that are still covered with wild foliage and ready to be restored to their original state, It was when the Incas possessed it.
Choquequirao is much larger than Machu Picchu, although experts believe only 40% has been discovered so far, so there is likely to be much more to explore in the future. You will visit squares, temples and impressive terraces. All of this will make you wonder how ancient civilization could have built such a feat on top of mountains.
Do not miss some of the most important parts of the complex, such as the white stone llamas that were built to protect the important mountain that dominates the area known as Apu Qoriwayrachina. Choquequirao is still a mystery in many ways and imagine that in the next years you will know more.
After the tour, we begin our walk back to Santa Rosa, where we have lunch.
We then continue descending for another 2 hours until we reach Playa Rosalina at 1450 m/4756 ft, where we may have time to take a cooling dip in the waters of the Apurimac River. We camped and ate dinner here.
Once the sun has set, you’ll notice the night sky filling with stars and constellations. Contemplate its meaning before going to bed.
You will enjoy your last breakfast of the trip to Choquequirao hike 4 days, while listening to the roar of the Apurimac River and then start early to avoid walking under the scorching sun. Take a few last deep breaths and let Mother Nature guide you on your last section of the trek back.
We leave the camp after breakfast to start the two to three hour ascent to Chiquisca, to then start our way back to Abra Capuliyoc, near which we have lunch.
Make the most of your last chance to see the beautiful snow-capped mountains and take some memorable photos of the incredible scenery.
You’ll probably be physically tired at this point, but you’ll have such a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that none of it will matter. We will arrive back in Cusco and take you to the door of your accommodation around 6:00 p.m. m. for you to relax and rest as much as you need.

These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and there they will give you a small canvas bag, in which you will store all the belongings that you intend to take on the walk and that will not be in your backpack.
You will receive a canvas case or duffle bag during the briefing. The muleteers will carry them along the road and deliver them to you when you arrive at each camp. They measure 66 cm / 2 feet long x 36 cm / 1 foot wide.
A maximum of 8 kg is allowed per canvas bag, in which you can put your clothes or personal items that you need to do this hike.
The trek has to be paid for in full by at least 7.30 pm two days before departure. For example, if your tour departs on a Wednesday, then you must come to our office before 7.30 pm on Monday.
It would be much appreciated if you pay the trek balance in cash US dollars or local currency. You can withdraw some money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in US dollars or local Peruvian Soles). You can pay by credit card or PAYPAL online, but you will have to pay an 8% service charge, charged by VISA and PAYPAL. We do not accept bank checks or payment of the balance by traveler’s checks.
Of course! During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at our office(you can organize briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge.
Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Don’t leave items of value with your bags, put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (In the unlikely case of theft many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Travel Luxury company can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it’s in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. We strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of our tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, we will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be cancelled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by our operations department. Your safety is our highest priority and our decisions will be made to protect it.
You’re responsible for your objects during the tour. Please pay attention to where you leave your things and remember to take everything once you leave our trucks, tents, or restaurants.
A week ago my friends and I had a short visit to Peru and we did the 4 day 3 night Choquequirao trek with peru travel luxury agency, it was amazingly organized and professional from start to finish. Our guide, Carlos, was very attentive and very knowledgeable and passionate about the Inka culture. The food, which in this case was cooked by Diego, was varied and very rich, designed to give you enough energy to face the walks.
The muleteer did a good and hard job.
The hike itself is extremely difficult; Fortunately our agency had everything well organized and had a highly trained staff for everything, my friends and I were more than happy for this great service.
